My Journey to Faith

journeyFrom a young age I believed intellectually in Jesus Christ. My mother told me I was a Methodist and I believed her! But I had no real relationship with God other than the occasional hopeful prayer.

There was no evidence of Christ in my life other than an uncomfortable conscience that told me something was wrong! I was a moody, lonely and highly introverted person. I desperately wanted acceptance, but did not “fit the mould”. I was a failure as a “sinner”, but certainly no “saint”!

When I was a student, a friend told of his incredible experience of God at a youth camp. He asked me if I was a Christian; I answered “yes”. He asked me if I knew about the Holy Spirit; my answer was “no”. So he told me about the transforming power of the Holy Spirit; and I really wanted that. He also told me that God would not change my life unless I handed it over to him.

The challenge stopped me in my tracks, because it made perfect sense. So I went home, lay on my bed and prayed: “God, I want to give my whole life to you.” I immediately felt a strange sensation all over my body and somehow I knew God was there. No blinding flashes, no voices, but I was sure! (In fact, later when I needed re-assurance, I went back to my room and lay down, waiting to feel God’s presence!)

My life was never the same from that day onward. The first remarkable thing was an awareness of God’s presence. The next was the amazing way I found I was able to answer questions with knowledge I did not possess. I later learned about spiritual gifts of wisdom, knowledge and teaching, but they were active before I understood them!

I got involved in a youth group right away and was soon playing guitar and even teaching. God broke through my shyness and gave me joy and energy to overcome the moodiness. God had given me the power to live the life I was made for!

I am now a happy husband, a father of two amazing kids, a leader in the church domain and an author. I hate to imagine where I would be if God had not broken through into my life – and I am overjoyed and eternally grateful that he did!

In 1 Corinthians 4:20, the Bible teaches us that “the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.” I can testify that the power of God is available to transform those who seek him.

The Bible also teaches in Romans 10:9 that “If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” I am now absolutely convinced that this is true and urge you to put your faith in Christ. If you give everything to Jesus, he will accept you and he will transform you into everything he created you to be.

In my book, that’s an offer too good to refuse!!!
